Where Is Your Faith?

By Pastor Walt Stowe

And he said unto them,Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another; What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water; and they obey him. "Luke 8:25

What a penetrating, searching .question. "Where is your faith?" Like a mother asking a child, "Where are your shoes?" The question itself is a rebuke. Like the Sergeant asking the Private, "Where is your rifle?" The question suggests that the rifle should have been in his hands. "Hey, Cowboy, ! Where is your horse?" Cowboys and horses go together, don’t they? As Jesus asks the question it becomes a statement. "I have every right to expect you to have faith".  After all, didn't He find faith in those who were not even of the faithful? Look at the Roman centurion in Matthew 8:10 or the Syrophenician woman in Matthew 15:28.

"I have every right to see your faith." Faith that is alive and well can readily be seen (Luke 5:20). Where was this faith they should have had, the faith that should have been seen? Weren't they followers of Christ Himself? Hadn't they seen Him exercise His mighty power over death, disease, and demons of Hell? Wasn't He right there in the boat with them for goodness sake!? Good Lord man, where is your faith?

The question is not being asked of those who had no knowledge of Him. Not being asked of those who were ignorant of His saving power. No, it was not asked of those who still walked in spiritual blindness and darkness, it was asked of those who had been with Him; walked with Him, ate with Him, heard His powerful teaching, observed His ability to deal with any and every emergency and need. It's a good question. The right kind of faith will never be asked that question. James says in James :2:18, "My faith speaks for itself". This kind of faith breeds respect and admiration, not questions.

On a national level there was never a better time for the people of God to be asked such question as this, the time of America's War Against Terror". Where will it strike next? Do I dare handle my mail? The next .target, where and what and when will it be? Let me ask you Christian, where is your faith?

In The Storms of Life

In the storms of life, where is your faith? The great issues of life, when it's time to sink or swim, where is your faith? The disciples were fighting a raging storm. Seasoned fishermen though they were, they had seldom even seen such a storm as this. Their collective judgment told them that the boat was going to go down. They would alI perish. They would not be able to survive this storm. Dear friend, some storms are like that. The usual storm comes and we know that we are in for a rough time but we know that that's about as bad it will get. And then the unusual storm comes roaring out at us and we just know it will take us away; no way we can survive, wait a minute; was Jesus in the boat with the disciples? "Yes?" Was there any chance at all that the boat would go down with Him in it? "No."-Then don't worry about the storm. You might want to grab a seat and hang onto your hat but you need not fear as long as Jesus is in your boat.

In the worst storm of his life Paul, in Acts :24, could still say, 'Be of good cheer, for I believe God:" So his boat sunk. Well if your boat sinks in the will of God, who knows, maybe He has a yacht waiting for you. Point being that the child of God will survive the worst disaster in the most glorious way if his faith is where it ought be. My dear Christian friend, has tragedy thrown its shadow of darkest gloom across your path and perhaps taken the dearest and best from you? Where is your faith?

The wife who has been abandoned by a faithless husband, where is your faith just now? The lay-off finally got to you and you are hopelessly in debt, storm clouds have altogether blotted out the sun, where is your faith? Ought your faith not shine all the brighter against the backdrop of the inky darkness of blasted hopes and dreams? You profess to know Him, to be in union with Him, to acknowledge Him as Lord, God, and Savior. Do you really believe His Holy Word where it states in Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together' for good to them that love God,...»Listen to the Psalmist, "Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea" (Ps. 46:2) We don't have to ask Joni Erickson where her faith is, the swimming accident that left her paralyzed from the neck down...how tragic! 0h no! Her bright, happy beautiful songs, her awesome paintings (via brush held in clenched teeth) demonstrate, in gorgeous shades of living color, exactly where her faith is.

As Far As Daily Needs Are Concerned

Many of the concerns of life are not as severe as the ones already mentioned. Nothing drastic is happening. Tragedies are of no particular concern. We are just caught up in the rat race of daily living. Got to make money to pay the bills: the rent or house payment for our nice home, the car payment, clothes for the kids, groceries and gas are sky high, and don't forget the repairs for this or that. It's all we can do just to stay caught up, much less get ahead. "1 know I need to go to church more, wish; I could afford to tithe. Christmas is coming, 0' my! How are we ever going to make it!" Is this a pretty good description of the way you feel? Could I ask you a question? "Where is your faith?" Is Jesus your Lord and Savior? Is He in the boat of life with you? "Well, I guess so." Then, where is your faith? Didn't He say something about seeking first the kingdom of God and all those things would be added to you? If you would start putting Him first you wouldn't have to worry about the 'things'. I think I know where your faith is and it's not on Him. Your lack of faith or your outright indifference to Him is robbing you of a fruitful, joyful, and carefree life. "He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. " (Matt. 13:22) You didn't have to ask R. G. LeTourneau where his faith was when he risked bankruptcy because he refused to work his men on Sunday. Mr. LeTourneau was the man who invented those huge earthmovers, the ones that scoop up dirt in their bellies He became a millionaire many times over working on the Orange County Dam, he was ordered to work on Sundays to be able to meet a certain deadline. He knew the Lord would make the difference without the Sunday work. He worked his men up to midnight on Saturday and started them again at midnight on Sunday. When the bosses heard about it,.they stopped his last .check and were on their way to take over his operations. He stood. firm and prayerfully waited their arrival the next day. The man showed up and told LeTourneau .that he had started out to come and take over the job and the company; but on the way, something made him change his mind; if he felt he could do the job without working on Sunday it would be alright. Mr. LeTourneau spent the next hour just praising the Lord. He later went on honoring God in his business and before he went to be with the Lord was giving ninety percent of his income to the work of the Lord. His story is told in the book, "Mover of Men and Mountains" (We have it available.).

When you seek first to honor God in your life with your time, talent, and tithe you can claim the promises found in Matt. 6:33 and Phil. 4:19, "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Where is your faith when it comes to the daily needs of life?

When It Comes to Your Personal Peace and Tranquility

When the stresses of life tend to threaten your sanity, where is your faith? No one is immune to the cares and pressures of life. Family and social relationships, health problems, work-related problems, inward private fears, all these things can wear us down and rob us of our peace and joy. ' Where is your faith in those such times? Some go to the bottle, others turn to drugs or pills, some hunt up a psychiatrist or therapist. Wait a minute...where is your faith? Child of God, unless you have a true chemical imbalance or some other real medical problem you don't need to turn to the things mentioned above. God has amply provided for your peace of mind in any and all circumstances that may come your way. Knowing that the way of the transgressor is hard, just start right there and quit your transgressing. "Good understanding giveth favor: but the way of transgressors is hard." (Prov.13:15)

Otherwise, claim 1 Peter 5:7  "Casting all your care upon Him;.." This is God's plan for you, to have a carefree life. If your cares are on Him they are not on you. You want a peace that passes understanding? Claim Phil. 4:6,7, "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." These verses simply teach that if you will put your own will in neutral and turn it all over to Him to deal with, as He sees fit, you won't have to go nuts. Where is your faith? Can He handle it or not? Let it be the other guys problem, not yours. You keep your mind focused on Him. "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." (Is. 26:3) As the song goes, "Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there;..." don't pick them back up and truddle off with them. He guarantees to get the best outcome possible in any given situation and that's what you want, right? Well, turn it over to Him and praise Him for taking care of it for you.

When It Comes To Christian Service

When it comes to your service for God, where is your faith? Do you believe that God can and will use you? What is your excuse? Too timid? Not enough talent? Is it "I" this and "I" that? You have "I" trouble. Get your eyes off yourself and onto Him. God is not looking for talent and ability... believe me, or rather... believe Him, "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, an.d things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:" (1 Cor. 1:27,28). God is looking for someone who will simply trust Him for the strength and wisdom to get the job done. He promises never to leave you nor forsake you. To be with you to the end of the age. He promises that His grace will be sufficient, for His strength is made perfect in weakness. Now, dear brother or sister, what more do you need? Where is your faith?

As Far As The Future Of Mankind Is Concerned

So many doomsday prophets: the ozone layer, global warming, runaway asteroids, nuclear holocaust, World War III. Hey- where is your faith when it comes to the possibility of worldwide calamity? You see; God has His own program for planet earth and nothing will change it. We have read the last chapter and we realize that God is still in control. The end of the world, as the average person thinks of it, will never happen...bank on it. Bible prophecy makes it clear that one day King Jesus will rule and reign over planet earth. Don't you think that God has that right? He has never done it yet and this old earth is groaning for its day of glory with Him. Seems reasonable to me, and that's where my faith is concerning the fate of this world.

As Far As Eternity Is Concerned

As far as eternity is concerned, where is your faith? Do you believe that you will just die like a dog, life is over and that's it, no rhyme nor reason for you ever having existed in the first place? Maybe you take the position, "1 just don't know." And yet, something tells you that facing eternity is a fearful and awesome thing. A genuine child of God has already gotten it settled. Let us look at where his faith is not. His faith is not in any church or other organization. His faith is not in any merit of his own; that is to say, he realizes that he is not worthy of Heaven and never could be, his faith is not in his belief. "I believe in God" Yes, so does the Devil. His faith is not in his unbelief: "If I don't face it, it will away." Boy, are you in for a surprise! His faith is not in religious ritual, like baptism or any secret society mumbo-jumbo. I'll tell you where his faith is; his faith is firmly and squarely on the Lord Jesus Christ. "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life:" John 3:36. The word "believeth" is a word that means, "heart-trust". "That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth,... " Eph. l2,13.

The God of eternity looked down into time, saw it all at a glance, saw your whole life-including all your sin, every wicked thought, every wicked word, and every wicked deed, and wonder of all wonders He loved you anyway! ":..for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins..." Eph. 2:4,5. Wow! That is amazing grace! In His mercy and love He provided His own dear Son as the one who would pay for us the debt we could not pay. the penalty was death, death in all its aspects: physical, spiritual, and eternal.

"Christ died for the ungodly "... Christ died for us. " "... reconciled to God by the death his Son,..." "...the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. "(Rom. 5:6, 5:8, , :10; Gal. 2:20) The Bible says it in so many different ways, as though God wanted to make sure we could not misunderstand how the debt was paid. And, according to God's own plan, the moment we place our faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord, at that very moment God works the miracle of salvation. Has the reader placed his faith in the Lord Jesus as Saviour and Lord? "He that hath the Son hath life;..." (1 John 5: 12), "...he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. " l John 2:23 If you have never put your faith in Jesus would you do it today? Tell Him just now, Dear Lord Jesus, I realize that because of .my sins I need to be saved. I believe the Bible when it says that you paid for my sins by dying for me on the cross. The best way I know how, I now accept you as my personal Lord and Saviour. I am trusting you and you alone as my means of going to Heaven. Thank you for loving me and for dying for me and for saving me. Amen.

Dear friend, if you prayed that prayer from the heart would you let us know? We want to send you a booklet that can be a real help in starting your new life in Christ.
